The Land Where Islam First Found Refuge

الأرض التي لجأ إليها الإسلام أولاً

Long before Islam reached Arabia in full, the Horn of Africa — and what is today Eritrea — became the first sanctuary of the Muslim faith. In the 5th year of Prophethood (615 CE), when the early Muslims faced brutal persecution in Mecca, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ directed his companions to seek refuge across the sea.

قبل أن يكتمل الإسلام في شبه الجزيرة العربية، أصبح القرن الأفريقي — وما يُعرف اليوم بإريتريا — أول ملجأ للمسلمين. في السنة الخامسة من البعثة النبوية (615م)، حين واجه المسلمون الأوائل اضطهادًا شديدًا في مكة، أوجههم النبي ﷺ للجوء عبر البحر.

He told them: “Go to the land of the Negus, a king under whom no one is wronged.” And so they crossed the Red Sea to the Kingdom of Aksum — whose shores included the land of modern-day Eritrea. Eritrea was, in a very real sense, the first land outside Arabia to shelter Islam.

قال لهم: “اذهبوا إلى أرض النجاشي، ملك̬ لا يُظلم عنده أحد.” فعبروا البحر الأحمر إلى مملكة أكسوم — التي تشمل سواحل ما يُعرف اليوم بإريتريا. كانت إريتريا، بمعنى حقيقي، أول أرض خارج الجزيرة العربية آوت الإسلام.

Among those companions was Ja‘far ibn Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه), who delivered the famous speech before the Negus, reciting Surah Maryam — moving the Christian king to tears and earning the early Muslims protection. This migration is known as the First Hijra, a sacred chapter in Islamic history.

كان من بين هؤلاء الصحابة جعفر بن أبي طالب (رضي الله عنه)، الذي ألقى خطابه الشهير أمام النجاشي، وتلا سورة مريم — فأبكى الملك النصراني وأكسب المسلمين الأوائل الحماية. تُعرف هذه الهجرة بـالهجرة الأولى، فصل مقدس في تاريخ الإسلام.
